Washington-on-the-Brazos, TX—Star of the Republic Museum announces the launch of Blue Star Museums, a collaboration among the National Endowment for the Arts, Blue Star Families, the Department of Defense, and more than 1500 museums across America to offer free admission to museums across the country for active duty military personnel (with military ID) and up to five immediate family members. The initiative will begin on Memorial Day, May 28, 2012 and extend through Labor Day, September 3, 2012. Leadership support has been provided by MetLife Foundation through Blue Star Families. The free admission program is available to any bearer of a Geneva Convention Common Access Card (CAC), a DD Form 1173, or a DD Form 1173-1, which includes active duty military of the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard, National Guard, and Reserve.

“Through Blue Star Museums, the arts community is extending a special invitation to military families to enjoy over 1,500 museums this summer,” said NEA Chairman Rocco Landesman. “This is both an opportunity to thank military families for their service and sacrifice, as well as a chance to create connections between museums and these families that will continue throughout the year. Especially for families with limited time together, those on a limited budget, and ones that have to relocate frequently, Blue Star Museums offers an opportunity to enjoy one another and become more fully integrated into a community.”

Daily museum hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Star of the Republic Museum, administered by Blinn College, is located in Washington-on-the-Brazos State Historic Site, off Highway 105 on F. M. 1155 between Brenham and Navasota. For more information, call (936) 878-2461 or go to the website: www.starmuseum.org. The complete list of participating Blue Star Museums is available at www.arts.gov/bluestarmuseums.

Downstairs you will find the gentlemen’s parlor, the ladies’ parlor, a dining room, and a large meeting space. The beautifully carved cantilevered mahogany staircase leads to the second story, where you will find six rooms, including the office and original furniture of JD Giddings.
The Giddings Stone Mansion is a property of the Heritage Society of Washington County, formed in 1976 for the purpose of preserving both the Giddings Stone Mansion and the Giddings Wilkins House, built in 1843 by JD Giddings. The Giddings family chose the site of the mansion because it was the highest known point in the area, an advantage for avoiding mosquitoes, which carried malaria during the 1800s. The Mansion claims to be the first home west of the Mississippi to have central heat and electricity. The porches were built using imported brick from St. Louis. The Doric columns were added in 1896.

Little Known Fact: Mr. JD Giddings and his brother, DC Giddings, came to this area from Pennsylvania when their younger brother was killed in the battle of San Jacinto. As part of his war settlement, the youngest brother was entitled to land in this area of Texas. The older brothers were attorneys and bankers and came to claim the land here in Texas. They are known for several entrepreneurial endeavors in the area, the most well-known accomplishment being the railroad they built between Brenham and the town of Giddings.

Located just outside of Houston in the beautiful countryside of Navasota is the area’s oldest alpaca ranch. With over fifteen years of experience, Laurence and Donna Binder, owners of Bluebonnet Hills Alpaca Ranch, bring their expertise and knowledge to the fun adventures of raising and breeding alpacas. Since starting their business in 1997, the Binders have raised countless of these interesting, furry animals at an award-winning status and helped numerous clients in starting and growing their own successful businesses. Whether it is educating potential and new breeders or producing luxurious alpaca fiber and yarn, Bluebonnet Hills Alpaca Ranch is your trustworthy source for experienced mentorship and service.

The ranch is currently home to sixty-five alpacas. The Binders have bred their females with nationally known, award-winning herd sires from Ohio, Colorado, Oregon, Louisiana, and Texas. The ranch is a common meeting place for local breeders, particularly once a year in the spring for the sheering season. The ranch recently hosted clients, local alpaca owners, and a professional sheering company for a day of preparing the alpacas for the hot summer season and collecting pounds of new fiber. Alpacas produce one of the world’s finest natural materials. The fibers are used to create beautiful yarns perfect for fiber artists and enthusiasts.

Promoting and celebrating unity within a diverse society is the foundational mission of the Texas Center for Regional Studies. Located in Richards, Texas, this non-profit organization focuses on “research and educational programs centering on genealogy, history, and culture” to bring Texas history to life to residents today. Texas Center President Dr. Robin Montgomery and Executive Director Joy Montgomery lead the way to preserve the rich history of the Lone Star state and to spark a greater awareness and appreciation of the lives that made Texas what it is today.

To celebrate the immense diversity of Texas, The Texas Center for Regional Studies will be hosting the “Texas Legacy Celebration” on Saturday, May 5, 2012. The event will take place at August Horst Park in Navasota, from 10:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The day will feature cultural festivities of free historic fun for all ages and the honoring of three pillars of Navasota history, including Frank Hamer, Texas Ranger and Navasota City Marshal most notable for his killing of the criminal duo Bonnie and Clyde, Mance Lipscomb, Navasota-born guitarist and songster, and Rene Robert Cavelier, Sieur de La Salle, French explorer significantly responsible in part for the eventual establishment of Texas. The highlight of this exciting celebration will be the rededication of an existing La Salle statue originally presented to Navasota by France in 1976. Patrice Vanoni, Cultural Attache of France, will be present at the event, as well as a special guest who was only nine years old during the dedication ceremony of another La Salle statue to Navasota from the Daughters of the American Revolution in 1930. Charles Stewart, First Secretary of State and designer of the Lone Star Flag of the Texas Republic, will also be honored.

Texas spirits are a great addition to your holiday bar or your gift list. Many of us have friends or family that we like to give a taste of Texas, but it can be hard to find a Texas gift that doesn’t feature bluebonnets or Texas flags. Choosing a Texas-made product that isn’t necessarily Texas-themed is a great option for a gift that will remind them of the Lone Star State in a subtle and usable way. And if you’re needing a last-minute hostess gift, this is a painless option.

At your next holiday gathering, serve a cocktail using some of these Texas spirits.

There’s very little good I can say about this weed–until its fall color transforms to glorious golds and rich reds.

It spreads easily by roots and by seeds. The seeds can be carried by the wind or by birds, so this invasive tree can show up pretty much anywhere.

I try to pull these weeds when they’re young, but it seems like there’s one or two that I miss each year. My reward for tolerating them all year is their brilliant fall color, which is hard to come by in our part of Texas. Once their leaves drop, I wait until we get a little rain, and then I dig it up and dispose of it. By the time the tree is three years old, it can start flowering and reproducing, and I definitely don’t want to deal with that. The roots are invasive as it is.

But right now, I’m enjoying the color!
